It's called a thumb shift and yes it does go above the break lever :-P

Is there actually anything wrong with it what so ever? I know people are always bitchin' about the fork having to much travel and you're running a v-brake - that I really don't care about, but anything else that keeps turning people off? It's a sick bike and by the looks of it I'd ride it.
